Birmingham Chapter

Facebook - Twitter - Blog -

The Birmingham Chapter meets monthly, specifically every third Wednesday of the month, at locations varying from breweries to local businesses. Outside of our monthly newsletter, these meetings provide a way for our members to discuss educational opportunities, collaborate on event planning, and perhaps, more importantly, socialize while enjoying great beers with great company. Our annual capstone event is the Magic City Brewfest, encompassing worldly brews, with a smaller event in the fall, Fall FestivAle, focused specifically on local Alabama breweries. Our member exclusive events include our annual Holiday party, Summer Barbeque, and periodic beer samplings/food pairings. Traditionally, we partner up with other non-profits or local organizations in and around the community to provide volunteers/services for events, such as the Sidewalk Film Festival, Uncorked on the Green, and Brew at the Zoo. We also have a passionate barbeque team that has won awards at local barbeque competitions such as Birmingham’s Stokin’ the Fire and BBQ for Building – an annual event benefiting Habitat for Humanity. To further our MO of beer education, we will offer beer education opportunities through programs such as Cicerone and BJCP. We are always looking for the opportunity to meet, greet, and/or teach fellow brew lovers.

Jon Paolone

Jon Paolone - Chapter Head

In 2005, Jon attended his first - and one of the earliest - meetings of the fledgling group Free the Hops. Since then, he's learned far more about craft beer then he ever realized possible, and has gained a tremendous appreciation for the grass-roots organizing & activism that led to the legislative changes brought by FTH. Jon has attended and volunteered at every Magic City Brewfest & Fall Festivale to date. While he likes to proclaim he's a "Maine-iac by birth, a Southerner by residence, and a Californian at heart", his roots are deep in Birmingham. Besides craft beer, travel & outdoors are Jon's passions. His favorite brew of all time is the 2013 Bourbon County Proprietor's Stout, aka Prop.

Free The Hops I Alabamians for Specialty Beer is a grassroots non-profit consumer advocacy organization whose successful lobbying efforts to reform hostile laws have helped make Alabama one of the most vibrant and welcoming beer markets in the USA. As a craft beer consumer advocacy organization, our mission is to work within our communities to educate the public, support the industry at large, and remain vigilant watch dogs on legislative processes.
