This has become more than a comment on our blog. Apparently several people are convinced that the Governor has vetoed our bill and thus killed it for this year. It’s not true. I promise. Your aunt’s friend’s sister’s ex-boyfriend might be a staffer or whatever in Montgomery, but they are wrong if they think the bill’s been killed this year. Absolutely wrong. We will know within minutes if the Governor signs or vetoes the bill, and we will let everyone know immediately. It’s very likely that you will hear it here before you hear it in the press and before your third-cousin who used to be a lobbyist in South Carolina knows about it.
Danner’s on vacation now or he would probably be the one to quash this (and he would probably be more diplomatic about it). My fear is that this rumor will cause people to give up. We have good reason to believe Governor Riley is willing to sign our bill. In a recent interview on WSFA in Montgomery, Riley said he would decide on our bill sometime this week, which probably means next week. So, if you haven’t called the Governor yet, do so now. If you’ve already called the Governor, get your wife’s third-cousin to call.

What’s the latest at the governor’s office? Any decision yet?
I get your point, but you don’t need to resort to condescension to make it.
Condescension??? What are you talking about? This is the most ridiculous post I’ve seen on this blog in quite some time. No offense James, but get a grip!
Condescension? Absolutely… because I’m smarter than everyone else
There is a time and a place for everything. Condescension and sarcasm, there is always a time and place for it but there is no place for rumors during a sensitive time like this. If you didn’t see Gov. Riley sign or not sign the paper yourself, be quiet.
Condecenscion was well played
Condecension appropriate and funny.
Dan, your post was great!! I totally got your humor. Thanks for the update.
i’m a fan of quashing. the word, that is.
we need to quash these idiotic comments about condescension.
-quasher point guard.
quash quash quash!
all joking aside, it is best to only print the facts at a sensitive time like this…
I heard from a very reliable source that Bob Riley is going to veto the bill since he only drinks fermented moth guts because he is really a giant Martian rabbit in disguise who is here to prepare a home for his Venusian dinosaur overlords. But don’t worry, the dinosaurs are benevolent, and they will pass the bill as soon as they arrive and take power this fall. They really enjoy a good double IPA.
Dad is good friends with Riley. Talked to him yesterday and apparently Riley is planning on signing it. Of course. Riley knows my dad wants him to sign it so he’s probably just being a politician and saying what he needs to say to keep people happy. Then he will ultimately do whatever he wants.
I meant no offense, Dan, but look at the tone of the other blog updates here.
Please don’t assume that you are smarter than everybody else who looks at this blog (even at 1.14 am); now is the time to be matter of fact, especially since you got schooled by Stuart on a previous blog post. This blog is read by a lot of people who happen to take the bill very seriously.
If you need to be reminded, here is a link to your reprimand: http://www.freethehops.org/blog/2009/05/incorrect-information-in-fth-blog-post-2/
I am narcissistic and occasionally even condescending. It wasn’t my intent to offend anyone. I was just utilizing some cynical humor to make a point.
I can’t believe someone is giving Dan crap. Do you realize how much Dan has done for the cause? Give him a break, and lift up a toast to Dan!
James your a total D-bag.
Dan’s post is a perfectly accurate response to the ridiculous rumours that people insist on believing. If you are offended by the content, maybe you should be less credulous in future.
Wow this has people’s panties in a bunch huh? I dont see the condescension. Seems like he merely stated that the people working on this bill will know before Joe Schmoe. So like he said, your Dad’s, uncle’s, ex gf from college who was Rileys dogsitter that one time, doesnt know jack. Wait for the proper people to make an announcement.
No offense to anyone, but keep in mind that the governor will probably secretly sign the bill and wait two days before telling everyone. This is so all his buddies and buddies’ buddies can tell everyone else how they are in the know.
if someone is saying something completely pessimistic (like previously stated), I would be the first to accuse the people posting something like that as that person might be aligned with the religious right/opposition that is trying to tank this bill by getting “you” to NOT call the governor. Condescension? Its all in your heads. Dan is a straight shooter. He isnt here for giggles time.
I thought he only drank fermented infants blood. Boy, I was wrong. Monkey town custodians told me that!
Enough griping, we are here to free the hops dammit!! Keep the calls flowing. I’m hoping that since he signed the wine bill he’ll sign the beer bill. A few people that are involved with lobbying for the bill have all said mixed things as of what Riley will do. We shall soon find out!! Fingers crossed. I’ll be seeing Riley Wednesday and I hope to thank him!
It is very difficult to observe the Governor not sign a bill in any case.
What in the world is going on here?! Where is our commitment to getting this bill passed? We aren’t done here yet. We need to stop acting like children and stay focused. We all knew the rumor mills would cause some trouble, but I never thought we would have so many foolish people to believe in them. Keep to the facts people.
I just called Governor Riley’s office. The woman said almost all they have heard has been in favor of the bill. I asked her some of the numbers and she said on JUST Friday there was OVER 900 calls. She said that was just calls alone and there was no telling how many emails have poured in.
I then asked her if that was north or south the number of calls for most bills and she told me that it was “a lot for a bill.” So let’s keep it going.
I just called myself. I had emailed last week, but when everyone mentioned how quick the call was I figured I’d call, too. All I said was I was calling in support of a bill, and she knew which one. So apparently it’s been a steady stream of calls since Thursday. Maybe he’ll go ahead and sign just to free up the switchboard.
Why did you call yourself?
Just for the hell of it. Or maybe delusions of grandeur, pretending I’m the governor. Or maybe I AM the governor.

Without being prematurely optimistic, I look forward to toasting ALL of the dedicated individuals whose tireless efforts have gotten us through the Senate. Congrats, FTH! I’ll continue to rally my friends/family/co-workers to contact Gov. Riley for his signature on HB 373.
Sidebar: There are some truly brilliant, sarcastic minds contributing to this blog. Thank you for an entertaining read.
I wont listen to my third cousin or my barber, but I listen to the voices in my head. Those voices are the voices of reason, and “they” tell me that Dan “Tha Man” Roberts is right!
