Inquiring Minds Want To Know

First, everyone’s asking about what beers will be available when.  Allow me to refer you to the FAQ I penned a week ago: http://www.freethehops.org/blog/2009/05/friday-faq/

In short, expect to see some stuff on shelves next week.  The big wave of new arrivals will probably take several weeks or more.  And we don’t know when your favorite brewery will start distributing in Alabama.  Could be a couple months, could be a few years.

New higher alcohol beers WILL be at the Magic City Brewfest.  Buy your tickets quick.  It will sell out.

Also, not everyone was paying attention when our bill was amended.  Some people have just read the final version of our bill today and are wondering about the language that states retailers holding 0ff-premises beer licenses can only sell beer up to 6%, and they assume that means you can only buy the >6% to consume on-premises.  Not so.  Allow me to refer you to the full explanation posted on April 29th: http://www.freethehops.org/blog/2009/04/amendment-update/

In short, your typical upscale grocery store is already set to sell >6% at this very moment, while your less fancy grocery stores will have to endure some beauracratic red tape to get the right type of license to sell it.  But it won’t cost them any more money than their current license, and if they want to sell the products, they will be able to in due time.  If they don’t bother getting the right license, that means they don’t want to sell the products, so they wouldn’t have anyway.

And the handful of convenience stores who want to sell really good beer should also be able to get the right license.  It’s largely up to local authorities.

Please note: While the post below is titled “The Hops Are Free,” that’s not entirely correct.  Raising the ABV limit was the primary reason I started FTH, and it was always our highest priority, but there are other antiquated, asinine laws oppressing the craft beer industry in this state.  We’ll be having lots of discussions in the coming days about what to do next year, but rest assured we will continue to fight for sane beer regulation in Alabama, and there is much work left to be done.  And we still need your help.  So stay tuned — we’ve proven a grassroots effort can change Alabama law for the better.  Let’s keep up the good work.

And finally, a closing thought for the day.  Lots of people have directed special thanks to me and Stuart.  We do appreciate the recognition, because this his been a lot of hard work for no pay whatsoever.  But of course it took a helluva lot more work than just the effort of two people.  Even though I’m tremendously proud of changing Alabama law for the better, I’m even more proud of what FTH has become and all the people who have put in countless long hours.  It would be a mistake to start naming names because then I would leave someone out and there are just too many people.  But the fact of the matter is that it took a lot of people and a lot of tireless devotion to get us to this point, and it wouldn’t have happened without all of those people.  Some of them are listed on the About page on this site, but even more are not.

Thank you to all of them.  And thank you to every citizen who called his or her Representative and Senator and eventually the Governor.  I was told our phone calls made the difference in getting his signature.  It never would have happened if people hadn’t taken the time to make their wishes known to their government.  Democracy in action.

It truly is an exciting day.  We’ll see you tonight in Birmingham at The J. Clyde and in Huntsville at The Nook.

Aw and I was really looking forward to listening to Senate audio again next year and pulling my hair out….. :-P

Big thanks to everyone! Be sure to write your Representative (if they were in favor) and Governor Riley to thank them for their support. Courtesy will go a long ways in fighting future battles :-)

I know this question has been raised before, but I can’t find the previous response to it, so excuse me…..

Does this mean we will likely see >6% beers that are still banned in bottle form due to the container size limit become available on tap? In other words, do most breweries provide draft beer, or do some ONLY ship their product in bottles? Is it a hassle for them to distribute their product in keg/draft form? I’m afraid I have no idea how that works. Thanks.

That’s actually a good question. It will vary, but many beers that only come in 22 oz or 750 ML in bottle form are available on draft, and those can/will be sold here. Several from Rogue would be good examples.

This is a great day. Can anyone help me to find resources on what areas in Alabama already allow the sale of containers larger than 16 ounces? A while back I purchased some 22 ounce beers in Jacksonville, AL but haven’t really seen them anywhere else.

Nowhere in Alabama allows sales over 16 ounces (I believe). It’s state law. I believe that container size will be next on the agenda for FTH.

As far as I can tell, some localities have elected to raise the container size with city or county laws. That’s what I was told when I bought the 22 oz size in jacksonville.

You may also wish to look at post #22 on a previous blog for more discussion of that very question. The posters reference a website.

Gladly. Also, is it not crazy that we have to miss out on a 0.5L bottle of beer because it exceeds the size limit by a partial ounce?! So close….

Danner: which distributor has >6% ABV beer ready to go & where will the beers be going? :)

    • Danner
      Posted May 22, 2009 at 2:28 pm | Permalink

Birmingham Beverage has >6% in stock, but Beverly at the Nook has informed us via Brian Allen that the ABC told her nothing would complete the approval process for at least a week, and they won’t begin until Tuesday.

Anyway, Bham Bev has Rogue, Sweetwater, Good People, Ayinger, Westmalle, Orval, Duvel, Ommegang, Delerium Tremens, many more.

Can someone (maybe from Birmingham Bev?) post a full list of what we can expect and where we can find it? Not really concerned on dates. We waited this long, we can wait a few days… Just wondering what will be available, once it is available…

  14. Posted May 22, 2009 at 2:27 pm | Permalink

is there a list or any way to know, without just guessing or driving all over town, what stores will have higher ABV beers?

also, would it work to petition a local supermarket who might not carry such beers? i’m thinking specifically of Publix.

I think it’ll be a pretty good bet that if it’s an upscale store they’ll have the good stuff ASAP.

Does anybody know what pubs and stores in the Mobile-Eastern Shore area supported this bill and plan to start stocking higher abv beers soon? I know Hurricane Brewery is on the sponsor list, but of course FTH is in Birmingham and most of the supporters are local. Any info would be appreciated…I need to know where I can buy these great beers or else I am still stuck loading up my car in Louisiana!

I called the Hurricane Brewery today…they won’t have any local stuff ready for sometime. I called some others downtown and no-one knew much. So…not much in the next few days at least.

I just talked to the owner of Cottage Hill Package/Springhill Spirits, and he said he’s going out to buy additional racks for the new selection tomorrow. He also said that as soon as the new beers are available, he’ll be getting them. Cottage Hill has one of the best selections in Mobile already, so his store will be one to frequent often.

Im with Nancy Patersons Bistro in Montgomery, AL and have spoken with a few vendors. They said there are roughly 140 brands in discussion and should be available for distribution this coming week– some could take as long as a month to get in stock. We will be carrying as many as we can stock and will have a week long celebration once they arrive!!!
